The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner is the story of Alex who, with the help of his charismatic grandfather, Bay Dan, embarks on a journey in search of himself – on a tandem bike and with a set of backgammon.
Bulgaria, 1980. Alex’s serene childhood in a small provincial town is clouded. The militia insist that his father spies on his granddad Bay Dan, the local king of backgammon. The family decides to emigrate to the West. 25 years later Alex is in hospital in Germany after a serious car accident that has taken the life of his parents. Aged Bay Dan goes to Germany. Alex does not recognise his granddad as he suffers from amnesia due to the accident. Bay Dan starts teaching backgammon to his grandson. The ancient game brings Alex back to life. Bay Dan takes Alex out of the hospital and they take the road. During that trip back to Bulgaria – but also back into the past – Alex’s memory slowly returns and with it, there returns his will to live.
